Clean Drinking Water Plant

project-plant.jpg

After almost 70 years since India’s independence many remote villages have highly contaminated water sources with extremely high levels of dissolved solids, fluoride, iron, arsenic and other toxic components. Specifically, Telangana and A.P. have high fluoride
levels of up to 10 mg/l (against tolerable levels of 1mg/l) in drinking water sources - both surface and underground. The districts affected are Nalgonda, Mahaboobnagar, Medak, Nizamabad, Ranga Reddy, Warangal, Khammam, Kurnool, Anantapur, Guntur, Prakasam, Krishna, Srikakulam, Godavari, Chittoor, Nellore, Kadapa, Vizag and others.

In order to tackle the delivery of clean drinking water problem effectively, the IIT Bombay AA Hyderabad Chapter first identified badly affected villages, specifically with high fluoride and dissolved solid levels in water, as well as those contaminated with bacteria that creep in due to bad or lack of any sanitation. It was planned to set up several CDWPs in badly affected areas not touched by any governmental or nongovernmental agencies. In order to make these plants successful, the volunteer group decided to strictly follow the following criteria:

Local bodies such as the Gram Panchayat in conjunction with self-help local groups and/or a prominent local citizen must take ownership and be deeply involved with the project Maintenance of the plant is key, and local manpower must be adequately trained with constant follow up by volunteers and the vendor technicians. Clean Drinking water must not be given away free, but at some very nominal charge, and the funds generated should be used for consumables and maintenance costs incurred by the facility. For the plant to be self-sustaining and yet keeping a low charge rate, it was decided to sell water at Rs. 2 per 20 liters. The plan is to build a plant in each of 26 villages in Gujarat and AP/Telengana in 2 years.
